Man claims trial to attempted murder of cop

KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man claimed trial at the Sessions Court today to charges of attempting to murder a policeman and possession of a knife last week.

Yap Thye Sun, 56, was accused of attempting to kill Corporal Mohd Nazri Sudiman, 35, by stabbing him in the stomach with a knife. He sustained a penetrating abdominal wound with evisceration, which could have caused his death.

He faces up to 10 years in jail and a fine, or imprisonment for 20 years if found guilty under Section 307 of the Penal Code.

Yap was also charged with possessing a dangerous weapon — a 21.5cm gravity knife — without valid reason. The knife was found during a police check.

Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act provides for a jail term of five to 10 years and whipping upon conviction.

The offences allegedly took place around 12.30pm on July 31 at a roadside U-turn on Jalan Yew.

Yap, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin.

Deputy public prosecutor Nidzuan Abdul Latif did not offer bail due to the severity of the offence.

“There is a risk of the accused absconding if the court allows bail,” he said.

“The accused had inflicted serious injuries on a policeman who suffered intestinal trauma due to the stabbing.”

The court set Sept 2 for mention.

Earlier, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the suspect had 14 prior criminal and drug-related offences.

He said Yap was believed to have acted aggressively because he was in possession of drugs and tested positive for heroin.

Ayob had visited Nazri at Chancellor Tuanku Muhriz UKM Hospital’s cardiothoracic intensive care init.

Ayob said based on a doctor’s briefing, Nazri suffered a 3cm gash that penetrated 7cm into his abdomen, injuring his intestines.

Nadzri was stabbed while conducting a routine crime prevention patrol at the Pudu Market area about 12.55pm.

He and his four colleagues were inspecting a suspect who suddenly attacked him with a knife, stabbing him in the abdomen before fleeing.

The suspect was arrested shortly after and police found a 21.5cm knife and three transparent plastic packets, believed to be drugs.
