BUTTERWORTH: The fire, which started after the vehicle crashed into an electrical pole, caused part of the engine to catch fire, but the flames were quickly doused by bystanders before the fire department arrived.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said quick response from both the public and the authorities ensured that there were no casualties.
“Firefighters from the Prai fire and rescue station were on-site within 10 minutes, at 8.39pm. However, the situation had already been controlled by the time we arrived.
“The fire was fully extinguished by 9.08pm.
“The three occupants of the vehicle managed to exit safely and were not injured,” he said in a statement.
John said, following the incident, the scene was handed over to the fire investigation officer for further assessment.
