KEPALA BATAS: Thousands of motorists were caught in a standstill at the North-South Expressway when a lorry skidded on the southbound carriageway near the Bertam toll plaza here this afternoon.
A video showed traffic moving slowly to the north but the southbound lane was completely blocked.
A traffic advisory on @llmtrafik X account at 2.53pm read: “Beware of an accident at Km123 south-bound from Bertam to Sungai Dua. All lanes are affected, stretching 8.4km.”
It advised motorists to exit from the Bertam toll plaza and use an alternative route.
Many vehicles on the southbound lane were forced to turn back to the toll plaza and head north towards Sungai Petani before using the trunk road to head south again.
Motorist Alif Mohsin claimed on social media that he was at the scene when the incident occurred and managed to avoid the lorry in a nick of time.
He said he was heading south when the lorry began veering towards him.
“The lorry was heading towards me and I managed to evade it.
“I am lucky Allah protected me…maybe because I was with my heavily pregnant wife,” he said.
The accident scene had since been cleared at press time.
