A lecturer previously dismissed by Universiti Teknologi Mara over sexual harassment allegations has been ordered by an anti-sexual harassment tribunal to pay RM15,000 to a student of another university.
A three-member panel, chaired by Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor, found that the complainant, 21, had successfully shown that the lecturer’s unwanted sexual remarks and actions had caused significant emotional and personal harm to her.
It said the harassment had resulted in psychological and emotional distress to the student, who is enrolled at a private college in Nilai.
According to documents sighted by FMT, the tribunal ordered the 52-year-old man to pay the compensation within 14 days from today.
On May 21, the lecturer was charged in the Seremban sessions court under Section 354 of the Penal Code with verbal sexual assault of the student with intent to outrage her modesty.
He has also been suspended from his duties as a lecturer.
UiTM had terminated the lecturer’s employment following an FMT report two years ago after he was accused of sexual harassment against a female student, who was allegedly asked to answer inappropriate survey questions during a phone call.
He was charged in the Tangkak sessions court in March 2024 under Section 509 of the Penal Code for outraging a person’s modesty. The trial is ongoing.
