KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) is studying in detail the police’s preliminary investigation papers (IP) on the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir.
It said the IP was sent to its Sabah branch on Aug 3, and its Putrajaya headquarters a day later.
The AGC said it would conduct a thorough examination, studying all legal and factual aspects to ensure that future decisions would be based on the principles of justice and are in line with the country’s laws.
“Any decision on the case will be announced as soon as the thorough assessment of the preliminary report is completed.
“The department is grateful for the cooperation by all quarters. We urge members of the public to steer clear of any speculation which could affect the investigative process,” said the department in a statement shared on social media.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail earlier today said it has submitted the preliminary IP on Zara Qairina’s death to the AGC.
Zara, who was found unconscious after allegedly falling from her school dormitory building at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Sabah, was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQE I) at 11am on July 17.
The incident went viral on social media after allegations surfaced involving bullying by the child of a minister, VIPs, and other influential figures—sparking widespread reactions from netizens.
However, police said there is no evidence so far to support these claims.
On Aug 1, Zara’s family requested an inquest be held to determine whether any criminal elements were involved in her death.
