KEPALA BATAS: A suspect who attacked police and caused a commotion at flats in Taman Bukit Jambul has been confirmed dead after being detained in an incident on Saturday (Aug 2).

Acting Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the Indonesian man was found unconscious at the Sungai Nibong police station before being rushed to Hospital Penang, where he was pronounced dead.

“We received a report of a man running amok, wielding an iron rod at a housing complex, at 6.20pm on Saturday,” he told a press conference at North Seberang Prai police headquarters here on Monday (Aug 4).

“Our team rushed to the scene. When they tried to detain the suspect, he acted aggressively by punching an officer in the face and head, and trying to seize a firearm.

“Our personnel were assisted by several members of the public. The suspect was subdued and taken to the Sungai Nibong police station for further investigation,” he said.

DCP Alwi added that two reports were received against the suspect, one for trespassing into a flat and the other for smashing the window of a resident’s car.

He said a post-mortem showed that the suspect died of a heart attack.
