KUALA LUMPUR: Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds are expected across several regions in Malaysia, with warnings in effect until 12pm on Monday (Aug 4), says the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

In Kedah, areas including Langkawi, Kota Setar, Yan, and Kuala Muda are on alert for severe weather, MetMalaysia said in a post on its Facebook page on Monday.

Pulau Pinang is also expected to experience adverse conditions.

The warning extends to the entire state of Melaka.

In Johor, districts such as Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Bahru are forecasted to be affected.

In Sarawak, regions including Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Betong, Sarikei (Sarikei and Meradong), Sibu (Selangau), Mukah, and Bintulu (Tatau) are on alert.

In Sabah, Tawau (Tawau and Semporna) is expected to face severe weather.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour are imminent or expected to last more than an hour.

These are short-term warnings, valid for no more than six hours from issuance.
