JOHOR BARU: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued RM445,800 in compound fines to Singaporean motorists entering Malaysia without the required Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) between July 1 and Saturday (Aug 2).
JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan reported that 1,489 summonses were issued during Ops Penguatkuasaan VEP, a month-long enforcement operation targeting foreign-registered vehicles entering through Johor.
The operation was conducted outside the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex, the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) in Gelang Patah, and various locations around Johor Baru.
“A total of 14,379 vehicles were inspected during this period. Singaporean drivers found without a valid VEP were fined on the spot,” he stated in a press conference during the operation held near BSI on Sunday (Aug 3) night.
Despite the offences recorded, Muhammad Kifli noted encouraging compliance among Singaporean private vehicle owners.
“Based on our checks, close to 90% of Singaporean vehicles have complied with the ruling by registering and activating their VEP RFID tags,” he said.
As of July 31, a total of 277,930 RFID VEP tags had been issued to Singaporean vehicle owners, including individuals and company-owned vehicles.
Muhammad Kifli reminded all foreign vehicle owners to register, install, and activate the VEP RFID tags before entering Malaysia to avoid enforcement action.
“Under Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), it is an offence for any foreign-registered vehicle to enter or be in Malaysia without a valid permit,” he stated.
He emphasised that JPJ will not compromise with any party failing to adhere to Malaysian road regulations.
“The VEP enforcement operation will continue as part of our commitment to uphold the integrity of the nation’s transport system and ensure road safety for all users,” he added.
