Swimming trip ends in tragedy as two friends drown

KUCHING: An outing involving a group of friends ended in tragedy when two of them drowned while swimming in Sungai Rayu, Matang, near here yesterday.

One of the victims has been identified as 19-year-old Azli Abdul Kadir.

As of press time, the authorities are still in the process of identifying the other victim, who is believed to be in his late 20s.

A spokesman for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s operations centre said a team of seven rescuers from the Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Station was deployed to the scene after they were alerted to the incident at 3.55pm.

“Upon arrival, both victims had already been found by their friends, who had begun searching after realising they were missing.

“Both were confirmed dead by a medical officer from the Health Ministry,” the spokesman said in a statement.

The bodies were later handed over to the police for further action and taken to the Lundu Hospital for a post-mortem.
