Teen arrested after allegedly killing mother during prayer

JAKARTA: An 18-year-old girl allegedly murdered her mother while she was performing Zohor prayers at their home in Bengkulu yesterday.

Tangsel Xpress reported that in the 1pm (Western Indonesian Time) incident, the victim, Yati, 49, was attacked by her daughter, identified as NR, using a mortar and a knife.

It was reported that Yati died at the scene from severe injuries to her head and body.

After the incident, the suspect ran to a neighbour’s house and confessed to killing her mother.

“She came and said she had killed her mother. We were all shocked and immediately rushed to the victim’s house,” the neighbour, known as Ice, was quoted as saying.

The panicked neighbours rushed to the house and found Yati lifeless in a heart-wrenching condition before alerting the police.

Officers from the Gading Cempaka police sector (Polsek), together with the Macan Gading Resmob team from Bengkulu city police (Polresta), arrived at the scene and arrested the teenager for further investigation.

The suspect was taken to the Bengkulu police headquarters for questioning, while her two younger siblings were temporarily placed under the care of neighbours.

Yati’s body was sent to Bhayangkara Hospital in Bengkulu City for a post-mortem before being handed over to her family for burial.

Meanwhile, Detik reported that the teenager was confirmed to have a mental disorder.

Gading Cempaka police station Criminal Investigation Unit chief Inspector Putra Agung said that based on information from locals, the suspect had previously received psychiatric treatment.

“According to neighbours, the suspect had been treated in a psychiatric hospital. For now, we have detained her,” he said.
