Foreign minister Mohamad Hasan has welcomed the outcome of a recent UN conference in New York and growing international support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, and stronger humanitarian efforts for Palestinians.
He said Malaysia remains committed to the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Mohamad also reiterated Malaysia’s call for Israel to halt all killings in the Gaza Strip. He condemned Israel for what he described as the “relentless genocide and ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians in Gaza, and called for an immediate end to the blockade as well as full accountability for ongoing mass killings.
His statement comes a day after government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said Malaysia was reviewing the joint UN declaration, in which Hamas was urged to disarm and relinquish control of Gaza.
“Our permanent representative to the UN was asked to review and sign the declaration, but the government decided more time is needed to study it,” he said.
The declaration, signed by 17 countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, the UK, France and Canada, condemned the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and called for the immediate release of all remaining hostages.
It also urged Hamas to hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority as part of a broader two-state solution.
