MFL allows clubs to register three additional local players

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian football clubs can now register an extra three local players in their squads for this season.

The clubs can now have up to 18 local and 15 foreign players in their squads for a total of 33.

The decision to increase the local player quota was made by the Malaysian Football League (MFL) during a special meeting recently and is intended to reduce the burden on newly promoted sides who have limited resources.

MFL, in a statement released to the media today (Aug 1), however, made it clear that it is not compulsory for the clubs to fill up their quotas.

Clubs such as Melaka and Immigration, who have been promoted from the A1 Semi-Pro League, have also been exempted from fielding teams in youth competitions such as the President’s Cup.

Clubs will have until Aug 31 to register players during the first transfer window, while the second window will run from Jan 5-Feb 1, 2026.
