MIC has called for the setting up of a socio-economic development unit across 38 locations nationwide, especially in areas where 95% of the Indian population resides.
Party president SA Vigneswaran said the unit could be staffed by capable personnel within urban and local government agencies, serving to coordinate, monitor and drive progress on the ground in every district.
“MIC stresses the importance of establishing a dedicated implementation plan supported by a specialised unit, separate from the existing Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (Mitra) framework, to ensure effective execution and accountability.
“This dedicated unit can ensure ongoing, focused and sustainable delivery of programmes aligned with the objectives of the 13th Malaysia Plan and the Malaysian Indian Blueprint 2.0,” he said in a statement.
He also urged the creation of a sustainable socio-economic development foundation for the community, guided by a leadership committee under the Indian Consultative Council, which will also serve as the secretariat to the Cabinet committee for socio-economic development.
Vigneswaran expressed gratitude that the 13th Malaysia Plan, tabled by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in the Dewan Rakyat today, had included the party’s proposals.
“The focus on improving the quality of life of the Indian community, especially those from low-income groups across the nation, is a welcome and essential step forward,” Vigneswaran added.
He also said efforts to enhance social mobility should be implemented in alignment with the Malaysian Indian Blueprint and the Indian Community Action Plan.
Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat that the needs of low-income Chinese and Indian communities would not be overlooked, with a holistic approach taken to improve their socio-economic status, encompassing education, entrepreneurship and housing.
“Initiatives and programmes focusing on education and talent development – including STEM and TVET – will be implemented to enhance career opportunities for the Indian community.”
Anwar, who is also finance minister, said efforts to repair homes and strengthen community governance among Indian households will also be undertaken.
“Public infrastructure and amenities will be upgraded to improve access to social networks and raise the quality of life for the Chinese and Indian communities, including women, youths and the elderly,” he said.
