GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) demolished five stalls, including two operated by foreigners, during an integrated operation on Wednesday.
The authorities also seized numerous pieces of equipment, along with a tricycle stall.
The joint operation at two separate locations involved Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), the police, and several internal MBPP departments.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, MBPP said the operation, which began at 4pm, was conducted at the locations based on notices issued under the MPPP Hawkers By-Laws 1979.
“Enforcement at the first location involved the demolition of stall structures operated by foreign nationals, along with the seizure of business equipment and a tricycle stall.
“At the second location, four stalls were demolished in stages. One of the stalls had been rented to a foreign national to conduct business,” it said.
The city council said the demolition was led by officers from the Licensing Department, with support from the Enforcement and Engineering Departments.
The Urban Services Department handled the removal of the demolished structures and the clean-up of surrounding debris.

On the same day, the council, through its Valuation and Property Management Department, also carried out a separate summary enforcement action at the public housing and rental scheme in Taman Free School here.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with other internal departments and the police.
It said, under the terms of MBPP tenancy agreements, any tenancy in arrears for three months or more is subject to legal action and termination.
“This enforcement action was taken against tenants who breached these rental conditions.
“In this operation, a total of five residential units and one business premises were subjected to summary action.
“Occupants were instructed to vacate and return possession of the premises to the city council, and the main doors of the affected units were locked by MBPP.
“We advise all registered tenants and occupants of such premises to settle any outstanding rent within the stipulated period.
“Monthly rental payments must be made on or before the last day of each month to avoid late payment penalties,” it said.
