Selangor civil servants will not be barred from attending tomorrow’s “Turun Anwar” rally at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, according to menteri besar Amirudin Shari.
He said no circular had been issued on the matter, but advised civil servants to conduct themselves appropriately throughout the protest, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“Civil servants (from Selangor) must comply with directives from the relevant authorities and refrain from making inappropriate public statements,” he was quoted as saying after launching a book festival today.
“I’m confident that they understand the limits and guidelines set by the authorities regarding participation in a peaceful assembly.”
Amirudin said his office would not take disciplinary action against any civil servant found to have breached regulations, adding that the matter would be left to their respective department heads.
Tomorrow’s protest will be the first mass rally directly targeting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with organisers expecting a turnout of over 100,000 people, although police have estimated a crowd of 10,000 to 15,000 people.
Federal civil servants have been told not to take part in the rally. On Wednesday, the Attorney-General’s Chambers said there is a legal basis for the directive from the chief secretary to the government prohibiting civil servants from taking part in the rally.
