MACHANG: A 49-year-old man who lost both legs to diabetes complications now depends entirely on his wife for daily care.
Hazrizul Abdul Rahman said his wife, Fauziah Ahmad, 43, has become his main source of strength, taking on the role of family breadwinner and supporting their children.
His left leg was amputated below the knee seven years ago due to diabetes complications, but he continued to work.
Last December, his right big toe was removed after a bone infection, which worsened when a heel wound deteriorated and tests showed a fractured heel bone.
His right leg was amputated below the knee on Jan 5 to prevent further complications, he said at his home in Bukit Tiu.
The family recently received a visit from Cempaka Merah Asnaf Society chairman Che Norhayati Mohamed, who checked on their needs.
Hazrizul now undergoes wound cleaning every two days at Hospital Machang, accompanied by his wife. He also suffers from end-stage kidney disease and receives dialysis three times a week at a private clinic.
Costs are fully covered by Social Security Organisation, and he receives a RM750 monthly disability pension.
Financial pressure forced him to sell his sound system for RM2,000, while his children receive RM600 a month from the Social Welfare Department for schooling.
“I can no longer work. My wife’s support keeps me going. Her sacrifice has no equal,” he said according to Berita Harian.
Fauziah said she manages the family, selling cooked food daily from 4pm to midnight, and also cares for her husband and his elder brother, Zaidi, 54, who has a mental disability.
Despite the demands, she said she remains patient and determined to ensure her family’s welfare.
