KUALA LUMPUR: Pas says Perikatan Nasional (PN) will handle internal matters ‘harmoniously’ after agreeing to postpone a scheduled extraordinary meeting of the coalition’s top council.
Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the decision had already been made to defer the meeting, adding that party leaders would instead hold a pre-council discussion on Thursday night.
“The postponement of the PN meeting has been decided, and a discussion and pre-council will be held tomorrow night. We will discuss matters harmoniously within the consensus of PN,” he said in a brief response to New Straits Times.
His comments come a day after Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin wrote to leaders of PN component parties proposing that the post of PN chairman be abolished altogether as part of a broader restructuring of the opposition bloc.
In the letter dated Jan 27, Muhyiddin said Bersatu and Pas had agreed to replace the position with two new bodies — a presidential council led by Bersatu to set policy and an executive council chaired by Pas to oversee administration — arguing the move would end a simmering row over who should occupy the coalition’s top post.
The former prime minister, who resigned as the coalition chairman effective Jan 1, had also objected to an extraordinary supreme council meeting scheduled for Jan 29, which he said listed the appointment of a new chairman as an agenda item despite an earlier consensus among party leaders to pursue structural reforms first.
