KINABATANGAN: Barisan Nasional (BN) has retained both the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and the Lamag state assembly seat, with its candidates emerging victorious in the by-election.
Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar, 32, continued his father Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin’s legacy with a decisive win, securing 19,852 votes and a commanding majority of 14,214.
His main rival, Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman, a former Sukau state assemblyman, received 5,638 votes, while independent candidate Goldam Hamid garnered 946 votes.
For the Lamag state seat, Mohd Ismail Ayob emerged victorious in a straight contest, obtaining 7,269 votes against Parti Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek, who secured 1,588 votes.
The results were officially announced by the Election Returning Officer Dr Eddy Syaizul Rizam at the Official Vote Counting Centre in Dewan Sri Lamag earlier today.
The by-election saw 48,526 registered voters across 36 polling centres and 119 voting streams, including one postal vote and one early vote.
The by-election was called following the vacancy created by Bung Moktar’s death on Dec 5, less than a week after he had won the Lamag state seat in the Sabah state election on Nov 29 last year.
In that election, Bung Moktar secured Lamag by a narrow margin of 153 votes in a five-cornered contest, having held the seat since the 2020 Sabah state election.
As for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat, Bung Moktar had represented the constituency for six consecutive terms, beginning with the 10th General Election in 1999.
