KINABATANGAN, Jan 24 — Barisan Nasional () retained the Lamag state seat after its candidate Mohd Ismail Ayob won with a majority of 5,681 votes, Bernama reported.

The by-election results were announced by returning officer Dr Eddy Syaizul Rizam Abdullah at the official vote counting centre at Dewan Sri Lamag here tonight.

Mohd Ismail, who is better known as Miha, garnered 7,269 votes against Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek, who received 1,588 votes.

The Lamag by-election was called following the death of incumbent Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin on Dec 5 last year.

Bung Moktar had defended the Lamag seat for a second term during the 17th Sabah state election in November with a majority of 153 votes.

Meanwhile, the result for the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election remains unofficial, with counting still underway.

Earlier,  secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said in a Facebook post that had secured the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat with a majority of 12,426 votes, from 111 out of 119 polling channels.

The Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election saw a three-cornered contest between ‘s Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar, Warisan’s Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman and independent candidate Goldam Hamid.

The Lamag state seat was a straight fight between BN’s Mohd Ismail Ayob (BN) and Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek.
