SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Selangor government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) yesterday to boost the state’s digitalisation and smart city development agenda, backed by an allocation of RM450 million.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the initial allocation of RM350 million was reviewed and increased after a request from the state government.
“The MoU focuses on three main areas under the coordination and monitoring of the Selangor Integrated and Intelligent Operations Centre.
“They are the development of smart connectivity infrastructure; the enhancement of public safety and traffic management; and the implementation of smart flood management,” he said at the Selangor State Smart City Development MoU signing ceremony yesterday, witnessed by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
Present were Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
The Selangor government was represented at the Mou signing by state secretary Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin and MCMC by chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.
Fahmi said the implementation of smart city initiatives would boost Selangor’s urban planning and management capabilities through the use of integrated data and smart technologies, which would support more accurate, sustainable and high-impact policymaking.
“The development of smart connectivity infrastructure will form the backbone of smart cities, including the expansion of fibre-optic networks and provision of public WiFi facilities.
“It will also support the implementation of the National Digital Network plan to ensure wider, more stable and higher-quality Internet access in Selangor.
“The initiatives would improve the quality of life of Selangor residents through more efficient and responsive public services, safer urban environments and more structured, data-driven traffic and disaster management systems,” he said.
Fahmi added that broader and better digital connectivity would ensure no group was left out from enjoying the economic and social benefits of the digital era.
“The MoU, which aligns with the 2025 Smart Selangor Action Plan, positions the state as a leading smart state and digital economy hub through the adoption of digital and smart technologies.”
He said Selangor had emerged as the leading state in 5G coverage, in line with the Malaysia Madani aspiration that emphasised development based on well-being, sustainability and shared progress.
“Up to Dec 31, 2025, Selangor achieved 96.9 per cent 5G coverage. This achievement reflects the continued commitment of the government,” said Fahmi.
He added that the collaboration would serve as a catalyst for the growth of Selangor’s digital economy, spur innovation and attract more strategic investments.
