JASIN: Fourteen wooden shoplots, some over 100 years old, were destroyed in a fire at Pekan Simpang Bekoh yesterday.
Six of the units were still operating when the blaze broke out.
Jasin Fire and Rescue operations commander Deputy Superintendent II Saiful Nazri Mohd Nor said they received a distress call at 4.57pm.
Two teams from the Jasin and Jasin Bestari fire stations were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the row of wooden premises was already 90 per cent destroyed. The shops included food outlets, clothing stores, a mobile phone accessory shop, grocery stores and motorcycle repair outlets,” he said in a statement.
Firefighters were deployed from Jasin and Jasin Bestari, while water tankers from Ayer Keroh and Bukit Gambir stations assisted with fighting the fire.
Saiful said the operation was hampered by low water pressure in the area.
“No casualties were reported. The operation is still ongoing,” he said.
