Puteri Umno pushes for 30pct quota of women election candidates

KUALA LUMPUR: Puteri has urged the party to take concrete action to ensure that young female leaders from the Puteri and Wanita wings fill the 30 per cent quota for women candidates, saying this can be realised in the upcoming Melaka and Johor state elections.

Puteri chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi said this is crucial to ensure that the voices and talents of young women are given proper opportunities in politics, allowing them to champion issues related to health, the economy, family, society and the nation.

“We want to reiterate that must provide space for candidates from the Puteri and Wanita leadership to meet the 30 per cent quota for women candidates and the 40-year age limit for Puteri members.

“By providing this space, we not only strengthen the party’s leadership but also ensure the continuity of a capable, integrity-driven younger generation that can restore Umno’s prominence,” she said.

She made these remarks in her winding-up speech at the Puteri Umno delegates’ meeting here today.

Nurul Amal emphasised that the age-based motion is not intended to reject anyone or sideline experience and contributions, but to open space for an orderly, fair and phased generational transition.

“A party that wants to survive cannot rely solely on one generation.

“If we fail to manage succession today, we are putting the party’s future at risk, and that is a risk we cannot afford,” she said.

She added that the 30 per cent participation of women must translate into real opportunities, particularly in the selection of candidates from Puteri for the upcoming Melaka and Johor state elections.

“These state elections will be a test of whether women’s participation becomes a reality or remains merely a promise.

“Puteri members deserve meaningful and strategic roles within the party.”

She added that, to date, no Puteri Umno leader has served as a member of parliament or state assemblyman, even though the party has previously offered opportunities to contest in highly challenging constituencies.

“I myself was given the chance to contest in Kubang Kerian, , facing deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man in the 15th general election.

“We are not afraid to contest, but there must be fairness in the allocation of opportunities,” she said.

Nurul Amal also proposed that branch meeting motions be approved online to ensure that all members’ voices are heard and that the process is more efficient.

She said online approval would make it easier for members to participate, save time and costs, and ensure that meetings can continue without disruption due to location or schedules, especially for those with multiple commitments.
