PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Border Control Agency (MCBA) seized 2,000 units of unregistered medicines worth RM10,000 at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Cargo Complex yesterday.
In a statement today, MCBA said the seizure involved a package suspected to contain psychotropic substances, discovered during an inspection at about 11 am.
“Detailed checks revealed the package contained 2,000 Diazepam 10mg (Valium brand) tablets, suspected to be unregistered with the Drug Control Authority (DCA) of the Ministry of Health (MOH).
“The items are also suspected of containing psychotropic substances listed under the Third Schedule of the Poisons Act 1952,” the statement said.
All the medicines were seized for further investigation and action under Regulation 7(1)(a) and Regulation 30(1) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984, which is punishable under Section 12(1) of the Sale of Drugs Act 1952.
The case is also being investigated under Regulation 4(1) of the Poisons (Psychotropic Substances) Regulations 1989 and Section 30 of the Poisons Act 1952.
“KLIA MCBA remains committed to strengthening controls and inspections at the country’s entry points to prevent the entry of unregistered medicines and safeguard public health and safety,” the statement added.
