ISTANBUL: Malaysia and Turkiye have agreed to strengthen cooperation in high-value industries, with a focus on strategic sectors including defence, energy, construction, and advanced technology.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim said Turkiye has strong capabilities in the defence and manufacturing industries, particularly in drone technology development and large-scale construction.

This, he said, opens up broader opportunities for cooperation with industry players from Malaysia.

“Turkiye has its own strengths, particularly as one of the strongest in the defence industry, and as a country we have also decided to focus on the strengths of Turkiye’s nuclear companies in procurement efforts,” he said in his opening address at a roundtable session with Turkish and Malaysian industry players at a hotel here today.

Meanwhile, said Malaysia has its own strengths in the energy sector, including exports of liquefied natural gas, as well as the country’s important role in the electrical and electronics industry, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence (AI) at the regional level.

He said combining the industrial strengths of both countries could create more structured and high-impact cooperation, particularly in the development of new technologies, expertise sharing, and the expansion of market networks.

“This approach allows us to build complementary cooperation, with Türkiye and Malaysia leveraging their respective advantages to generate long-term economic value,” he said.

said efforts to strengthen industrial synergy are expected to contribute to increased bilateral trade and investment, while reinforcing the position of both countries as key strategic partners in their respective regions.

He added that the cooperation would be driven through private sector involvement, industry collaboration, and joint investments with the potential to generate sustainable economic returns.

Anwar also said Malaysia remains committed to positioning Turkiye as a key strategic partner in future industrial development, in line with shared goals of building a resilient, high-technology-based economy.

A total of 39 Turkish companies and seven Malaysian companies took part in the 30-minute roundtable session.
