GEORGETOWN: Firefighters were called to help move the body of an obese man, weighing an estimated 200kg, from the 14th floor of a flat in Padang Tembak, Ayer Itam, today.
It is understood that the man, estimated to be in his 50s, lived alone on the 14th floor and died at about 2pm.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations, John Sagun Francis, said the department received a call at 5.59pm from police requesting assistance to retrieve the body.
“The rescue team conducted a ‘size up’ while wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) to lift the body.
“The body was carried down to the ground floor using a canvas stretcher, with help from local residents,” he said when contacted today.
John Sagun added that the body was handed over to mortuary management and the police for further action.
“However, the identity of the victim could not be ascertained when this welfare task was carried out,” he said.
