Umno meeting discusses Sabah by-elections, party general assembly


KUALA LUMPUR: A closed-door meeting of ‘s political bureau was held at Menara Dato Onn today, attended by several senior party leaders.

It is understood that the meeting was convened to discuss the Kinabatangan and Lamag by-elections, as well as the upcoming General Assembly, among other matters.

Speaking briefly after leaving the meeting, Youth chief Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh declined to disclose details, deferring any official announcement to secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

“Alhamdulillah, is all I can say. You have to ask the secretary-general about what happened in the meeting.

“In the party, the results of the meeting would be informed by the secretary-general. All I can say is Alhamdulillah,” he told reporters.

Others present at the meeting included vice-presidents Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Melaka chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Perak Umno chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Ahmad, Negri Sembilan Umno chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, and Kedah Umno chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

The Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and the Lamag state seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who was also the former Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman.

The Election Commission has fixed polling day for both by-elections on Jan 24, with nomination day scheduled for Jan 10 and early voting on Jan 20.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Umno General Assembly, originally scheduled for Nov 26 to 29, has been postponed to Jan 14 to 17 due to the Sabah state election, which took place from Nov 15 to 29.
