A 26-year-old man claimed trial in the Muar magistrates’ court today to causing the death of a two-year-old in a crash on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) in May.
Ong Kai Wei, a badminton coach, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Suzana Mokhtar, Berita Harian reported.
Ong is accused of driving a multipurpose vehicle recklessly and causing the death of Ayesha Sofea Anwaruddin, who was a passenger in a car.
The offence was allegedly committed at Km144.9 of the PLUS highway, near Muar, at about 7.35am on May 26.
The charge was framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for up to 10 years in jail and a maximum RM50,000 fine upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Amieerah Alludeen prosecuted, while Ong was represented by lawyer Siti Nurashikin Fuaddin.
Ong was allowed to post bail at RM5,000 but had his driving licence suspended pending the disposal of the case.
The court fixed Aug 20 for case mention.
