KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) will abide by established principles and collective consensus in Perikatan Nasional (PN) as the coalition navigates a leadership transition following the resignation of its chairman, party information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said.
Bersatu, he said, accepts in principle any decision made by the PN Supreme Council and will adhere to the coalition’s constitutional framework.
“Based on principles and policy, Bersatu accepts any decision made by the PN Supreme Council,” Tun Faisal told the New Straits Times, referring to provisions under the coalition’s constitution governing leadership changes.
He cited Clause 8.3(b) of the PN constitution, which states that a chairman’s resignation only takes effect after approval by the Supreme Council, which must then select a new chairman “as soon as possible.”
“In the near term, Bersatu will hold meetings of its Political Bureau and Supreme Leadership Council to discuss related matters in greater depth, including issues concerning PN,” he said, adding that the PN Supreme Council meeting would be announced soon.
Tun Faisal said Bersatu was also monitoring public opinion and grassroots sentiment amid the uncertainty surrounding the coalition’s leadership.
His remarks come as Pas confirmed it will assume the leadership of Perikatan Nasional following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation.
Pas president, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, said the party would hold a special meeting next week to select a new chairman, adding that the post would not be filled by a Bersatu leader.
Earlier on the same day, Muhyiddin said he would remain as Bersatu president and reaffirmed the party’s loyalty to Perikatan Nasional.
