PETALING JAYA: The unity government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains intact despite renewed calls to revive Muafakat Nasional (MN), he said today.
Anwar was met by reporters after Friday prayers at Masjid Jumhuriah here, following an earlier lunch with local residents at Taman Dato Harun, where he engaged with the community.
“That is not serious yet. I have not received any information. It is up to each party,” Anwar said when asked about proposals to bring MN back.
“What is important now is that the unity government remains intact and everyone has pledged to focus on economic growth and safeguarding the welfare of the people until the next general election.”
Muafakat Nasional, formed in 2019, is a Malay-Muslim political alliance between Umno and Pas.
It was created to consolidate the Malay-Muslim vote, coordinate electoral strategies, and promote policies seen as protecting Malay-Muslim interests.
While MN has influenced regional politics, it has largely remained outside the federal government, and its revival is uncertain without agreement from party leaders.
Suggestions to reactivate MN have resurfaced amid internal tensions within Perikatan Nasional (PN) and broader Malay-Muslim political manoeuvring.
On whether the revival could affect the cohesion of the unity government, Anwar dismissed the notion.
“That is a matter of their own ambitions and fears. Whether they split is not my concern. We are not involved. That is Pas and Bersatu’s issue.
