Coach Subramaniam quits Melaka team after defeat

KUALA LUMPUR: Melaka’s assistant coach S. Subramaniam resigned after the 3-0 defeat to in a Super League match on Sunday at the MBPJ Stadium.

Subramaniam walked away from the Melaka team after 22 months.

Thrust onto the bench with barely 48 hours’ notice following head coach K. Devan’s absence due to a professional course, Subramaniam admitted the chaotic build-up, which also saw another assistant coach away in London for a family event, left Melaka scrambling even before kickoff.

But the former national defender did not hide the deeper problems.

He said the team’s inability to cope in the Super League stemmed from one hard truth: Melaka’s foreign players were not ready for top-level play, and the club’s budget-conscious approach has left them badly outgunned.

“This is our reality. In this league, all 13 teams rely heavily on foreign players. came full strength with six. We played with two or three, and even then, they’re not ready for the Super League. That’s why we struggled,” he said.
