Abu Bakar assures policy continuity, strong federal ties for Perlis


ARAU: Newly appointed Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has assured that his administration will continue the policies and direction set by the previous state government.

The Perlis Bersatu chairman said his administration would maintain close ties with the Federal Government, while prioritising the welfare of the people and the state’s development.

“…We will continue to uphold diplomatic relations. What matters most is that we set politics aside and prioritise the people.

“With assistance and support from the Federal Government, we will be better positioned to address the issues faced by the people of Perlis,” he told reporters after being sworn in at Istana Arau here today.

Earlier, Abu Bakar, who is Kuala Perlis assemblyman, took his oath of office before the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, at about 4pm at the palace.

He takes over from former menteri besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, who resigned on Thursday citing health reasons.

Abu Bakar expressed his gratitude and loyalty to the Raja of Perlis for the confidence and responsibility entrusted to him in leading the state administration.

“I am confident that with the support of my fellow assemblymen and colleagues in the government, we can work together to further enhance development and progress in Perlis,” he said.

Abu Bakar also conveyed his appreciation to Shukri, who is Sanglang assemblyman, for his contributions during his tenure at the helm of the state government.

Meanwhile, Abu Bakar said the state would finalise several matters before announcing the composition of the new state executive council.

“InsyaAllah, we will be balancing it, we are in PN, a coalition comprising and Bersatu, will ensure fair and balanced representation,” he said.
