MELAKA: Umno Youth will holding a special convention to discuss the party’s direction and its role in the unity government.
Its chief, Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, said the convention, titled “Umno‘s direction: Stay or leave the unity government”, will take place at the Tun Dr Ismail Hall, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) on Jan 3.
He said the special convention was called following the failure of Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin to apologise as demanded previously by Selangor Umno Youth within 24 hours, which caused disappointment among the party grassroots.
“To date, no apology has been made. Therefore, I wish to commend Selangor Umno Youth and Umno Puchong for taking a firm stand by severing ties with Pakatan Harapan in the area,” he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Umno Puchong officially announced it had terminated all forms of political cooperation with Pakatan Harapan in the constituency, effective immediately.
Umno Puchong secretary Mohamad Yusof Mohamed Yassin said this followed Bee Yin’s failure, as DAP publicity secretary, to apologise within the stipulated 24-hour period which ended on Dec 24 for her remarks concerning former party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The incident followed her social media post alongside a link to a news portal article titled “No house arrest for Najib”.
The post was uploaded on Monday, a few hours after the High Court here rejected Najib’s judicial review application in relation to the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.
Dr Akmal said he is inviting all party members to attend the convention to voice their opinions openly and courageously.
He stressed that the stance of Umno Youth is not a personal view but reflects the true sentiments of grassroots members who remain loyal to and supportive of the party’s struggle.
He added that the discussions and resolutions reached at the convention will be brought to the Umno Supreme Council meeting before being officially submitted to the party president.
“I urge all Umno leaders and members, whether holding positions or not, to attend to hear and understand the grassroots’ voice in determining the party’s future,” he said.
