KUALA LUMPUR: Fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, with his financial resources, may be hiding in either Shanghai, Macau or Myanmar.
According to a source, Low, better known as Jho Low, remains elusive as numerous quarters offer him protection.
Intelligence suggests that as of Dec 2025, Low is believed to be in Shanghai, Macau or Myanmar.
“It can be said that he is safe because his financial resources ensure his whereabouts are not disclosed to the authorities.
“Many quarters are offering him protection. Due to his financial capabilities, he is untouchable and difficult to track,” the source told Berita Harian.
The source added that Malaysia previously sent a team to Hong Kong to track Low, but the fugitive had disappeared by the time they arrived.
“Not long after that, Malaysian authorities here received information that he was hiding in China, but the authorities there could not verify that,” the source said.
On Friday, the High Court found former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak guilty of 21 money laundering charges and four counts of abuse of power linked to the misappropriation of RM2.3 billion in 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) funds.
Presiding judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled that Low acted as Najib’s proxy, conduit and agent.
The court sentenced Najib to 15 years in prison and imposed a fine of RM13.4 billion.
Najib’s lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said the defence would file an appeal on Monday.
