PUTRAJAYA: In a letter he penned to Malaysians, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak called on them to remain calm and rational, urging them not to be swayed by provocations that could undermine the judicial process.
The letter, handed to his lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, came after the High Court sentenced Najib to 165 years in prison and imposed a fine of RM11.4 billion for the misappropriation of RM2.3 billion in 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds.
Najib expressed his continued confidence in the nation’s judiciary.
“Whatever the outcome today, I have full confidence in the nation’s judicial process.
“I urge all Malaysians to remain calm, rational, and dignified, and not to be influenced by any provocations that could threaten public harmony or undermine the judicial process,” the letter read.
Shafee read the letter during a press conference today.
Najib said he remained determined to continue, not out of resentment, but out of principle, as what he seeks is merely the rights provided by law and what has been duly granted.
“My intention has never changed: to contribute to the nation’s development and the well-being of its people.
This struggle is not an attempt to evade responsibility; it is an effort to uphold justice, to safeguard the integrity of the Constitution, and to defend the sovereignty of the rule of law, applied without fear or favour.
“I will continue to pursue my rights through lawful channels, with dignity and patience, even though the path is lonely and demands great sacrifice,” he said.
Earlier, the former Pekan member of parliament was found guilty by the High Court of four abuse of power and 21 money laundering charges involving RM2.3 billion of 1MDB funds.
