PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been sentenced to 15 years’ in prison in the 1MDB case.
On Friday (Dec 26), trial judge Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah on Friday (Dec 26) delivered the sentence and fined the former prime minister RM11.4bil.
The High Court has delivered its long-awaited verdict in the RM2.8bil 1MDB trial, capping more than seven years of courtroom battles in one of Malaysia’s most consequential corruption cases.
Earlier, Najib had been found guilty of all four charges of misappropriating 1MDB funds and 21 counts of money laundering.
Justice Sequerah said he has considered all the mitigating factors by the defence and the aggravating factors by the prosecution.
“I’ve taken into consideration the cases cited and the principles of law. I have also considered the public interest element and the principle of deterrence, the length of his public service and other mitigating factors,” he said.
He sentenced Najib to 15 years for each of the charges on abuse of power, and a total fine of RM11.4bil, which is five times the amount of gratification involved in the charges.
All of the jail time is to run concurrently.
