KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has called on all parties to remain calm over the political developments in Perlis and to leave the decision to Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.
He said all political decisions and stances in the state should also be based on the interests of the people, the state, and the long-term stability of the region.
“At this time, the people have full confidence in the decisions and wisdom of Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.
“He will exercise his wisdom and prerogative powers in accordance with the State Constitution to determine the appointment of a new menteri besar.
“The priority is to ensure that the Perlis state government continues to function effectively and can fully focus on the welfare and needs of the people, in line with the mandate and expectations given to Perikatan Nasional in the 15th general election,” he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Sanglang assemblyman Mohd Shukri Ramli announced his resignation as Perlis menteri besar for health reasons.
Mohd Shukri was the 11th menteri besar of Perlis, appointed on Nov 22, 2022, and the first politician from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition to take over the state administration from Barisan Nasional (BN), which had ruled Perlis for 65 years.
The development follows allegations that several assemblymen from Pas and Bersatu submitted statutory declarations (SDs) to the Raja of Perlis last Friday, stating that they no longer supported Mohd Shukri’s leadership.
As a result of the meeting of the Pas Central Working Committee, the membership of three Perlis assemblymen from the party was immediately revoked.
