KUALA LUMPUR: Sanglang assemblyman Mohd Shukri Ramli of Pas today announced his resignation as Perlis Menteri Besar.
His resignation comes amid an ongoing political crisis following reports that eight Perikatan Nasional assemblymen, including those from Pas, had withdrawn their support for Shukri as Menteri Besar.
In a press conference broadcast live on his Facebook, Shukri, who was recently discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for chest pains, cited health reasons as the factor behind his resignation.
The former Perlis Pas commissioner said he was granted an audience with the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, at the Royal Ward of Tuanku Fauziah Hospital here at noon today to convey his intention to resign.
“First of all, I would like to inform you that I was granted an audience with His Majesty this afternoon and expressed my intention to resign as Menteri Besar due to my health, which is not very accommodating.
“I have submitted my resignation letter, and I would like to express my gratitude to all members of the Perlis government administration who have supported me and my colleagues.
“The decision to step down is entirely due to my health and my choice to relinquish the position, and is not related to any other matters,” he said.
Shukri stressed that he will continue to serve as the Sanglang assemblyman.
“I am still the state assemblyman for Sanglang and will continue serving the people in my constituency.
“I also wish to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my administration of the state,” he added.
Asked about the Raja of Perlis’ acceptance of his resignation, Shukri said he believed that there will be a written response from the palace on whether his resignation will be accepted.
He added that he had been informed his resignation would take effect today, or remain in place until a new successor is appointed.
Shukri was appointed the 11th Menteri Besar of Perlis on Nov 22, 2022, and is the first politician from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition to take over the administration from Barisan Nasional (BN), which had governed Perlis for 65 years.
Last night, Pas had announced that the party had sacked three of its members, who are also Perlis assemblymen.
The three are Chuping assemblyman Saad Seman, Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji).
Earlier today, Perlis State Legislative Assembly Speaker Rus’sele Eizan declared the three seats vacant.
He said he would notify the Election Commission (EC) of the vacancies in Chuping, Bintong and Guar Sanji soon.
