Sabah return to winning ways with Terengganu win

KUALA LUMPUR: FA Cup finalists Sabah snapped their losing run in the Super League with a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Terengganu at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak on Tuesday.

Terengganu struck first through Akhyar Rashid in the 34th minute, but Fergus Tierney levelled just before the break (45th) before Ajdin Mujagic swung the match in Sabah’s favour with a 74th-minute strike.

Any hopes of a late Terengganu comeback were extinguished when Mujagic completed his brace from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after Diego Landis was penalised for handball.

The victory was a timely response from the Rhinos, who had suffered a bruising 5-0 defeat to Johor Darul Ta’zim in the FA Cup final before losing 3-2 to Brunei’s DPMM last week.

The win lifted Sabah one place to eighth in the 13-team Super League standings with 13 points from 12 matches, while Terengganu remain fifth on 18 points.

At the Selayang Stadium, brushed aside bottom-placed Police 3-1.

Brazilian forward Chrigor Moraes netted a brace (21st, 49th) with Jordanian midfielder Noor Al-Rawabdeh adding a third in the 67th minute.

Fakhrul Azim scored a late consolation for Police.

now have 22 points from 11 matches and are fourth, while Police stay rooted to the bottom with six points from 12 games.

Meanwhile, DPMM recorded their fourth Super League win with a comfortable 2-0 victory over struggling Penang at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

Goals from Jordan Murray (18th) and Azwan Ali Rahman (23rd) condemned Penang to their eighth defeat of the season.

DPMM sit seventh with 14 points from 12 matches, while Penang languish in 11th on eight points.
