KUALA LUMPUR: Digital Ministry is preparing a detailed report on legislative measures to address the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI).
The report will be presented to the Cabinet for approval by this year, its minister Gobind Singh Deo said.
Gobind explained that while certain high-risk areas of AI may require legal frameworks to mitigate risks effectively, other areas might be adequately governed through standards and regulations.
He noted that AI’s expansive reach across various fields demands a tailored approach to oversight.
“Artificial intelligence is a matter that spans across all fields.
“Some areas demand legislative focus due to the higher risks involved and the need for a structured approach to enforcement. However, there are also areas where standards or regulations may suffice,” he said.
The report, currently being developed by the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO), aims to identify the aspects of AI that require control and outline the appropriate mechanisms, be it through legislation, regulations or standards.
“We are broadly assessing and outlining what aspects require control and the types of control necessary, whether through standards, regulations or legislation,” Gobind said.
NAIO is finalising its findings, which will soon be submitted to the ministry.
Once reviewed, the recommendations will be presented to the Cabinet for further deliberation and approval.
Gobind said the initiative marks a significant step in determining Malaysia’s approach to AI governance, reflecting the ministry’s intent to address emerging challenges responsibly and effectively.
