KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged the public to remain vigilant and fully comply with instructions from the authorities amid the ongoing floods affecting several states.
This includes relocating immediately to temporary relief centres when directed, to ensure the safety of themselves and their families.
The prime minister also said the government will continue to closely monitor the flood situation and assistance will be channelled in the best and fastest manner possible.
“I am deeply affected by the flood disaster currently impacting several states and by the plight of those affected.
“The Madani government, through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), has coordinated immediate actions with relevant agencies.
“This includes the dissemination of early emergency SMS alerts by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the distribution of welfare assistance and basic necessities by the Social Welfare Department, and the operation of emergency pumps by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to control water levels and reduce flood risks,” he said in a statement.
Anwar also expressed appreciation to front-line personnel and volunteers working tirelessly on the ground to assist flood victims.
“I pray that this disaster will subside soon and that flood victims will be able to return to their normal lives.”
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Nadma Committee Chairman said the second wave of the Northeast Monsoon floods, rainfall is expected to be five to seven times more intense than during the first wave.
Zahid added that enforcement agencies had been instructed to mobilise Welfare Department staff, police officers, and soldiers from unaffected areas and districts as reinforcements to assist with rescue, evacuation, and security operations in flood-hit states.
