JOHOR BARU: Panic gripped residents of Jalan Kempas 7 near Taman Megah Ria today as a massive fire broke out in the Kota Puteri Industrial Park, spreading rapidly and threatening nearby homes.

The blaze, which engulfed about 1,000sq m of industrial property, was intensified by strong winds and dry weather.

Heat and smoke affected at least 27 nearby houses, prompting the Fire and Rescue Department to order a temporary evacuation.

Resident Zulkarnain Mohamad Nor, 63, said he feared for his safety as flames were just 50m from his home — a first in his two decades living there.

“It started about 11.30am. At first, I saw thick smoke. Then the fire spread incredibly fast. Several parked lorries caught fire.

“It was frightening. We’ve seen how bad fires can get, like in Putra Heights. The firefighters told us to evacuate immediately.”

The situation worsened when explosions were heard, sending residents running.

Elesha Alwi, 42, a housewife with three young children, said she panicked when the blasts rang out before noon.

“By 1pm, the flames were high and the smoke turned black. My children and I were inside when the police and firefighters told us to leave,” she said.

“We rushed out through the back door. We couldn’t risk waiting.”

As at press time, firefighters were still battling the blaze and monitoring the area for further risks. No injuries were reported, but authorities remain on high alert.

The cause is under investigation.
