Take UEC issue to court, Johor Umno Youth tells DAP

JOHOR BARU: Johor Youth has challenged DAP to seek a judicial review over the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), saying the move would finally put to rest a long-running and politically charged debate.

In a statement today, Johor Youth chief Noor Azleen Ambros criticised DAP for repeatedly politicising issues of national unity and education, accusing the party of reviving the UEC demand for narrow political gain.

The statement followed remarks by DAP deputy secretary-general Nga Kor Ming, who reportedly urged the government to recognise the UEC and warned that the party could withdraw from the ruling coalition if the demand was not met.

Noor Azleen said the timing of the renewed push, coming shortly after DAP’s heavy losses in the 17th Sabah general election, reflected growing anxiety within the party and a lack of strategy to stem eroding support among Chinese voters.

“The demand for UEC recognition is not new and is deliberately recycled, particularly ahead of elections.

“Turning education and national unity into seasonal political tools is irresponsible and immature,” Noor Azleen said.

To end the prolonged controversy, Noor Azleen said DAP should bring the matter before the courts for judicial review.

“If the court rules that the UEC is in line with the federal constitution and fulfils national education policies and aspirations, there would be no reason for the government to delay its recognition,” he said.

Noor Azleen said that a definitive court ruling would settle the issue once and for all, allowing the government and stakeholders to focus on more pressing efforts to strengthen and improve the country’s education system.

vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani was reported as saying that the UEC should not be politicised, and that Malaysia offers various pathways for students, whether through universities or different academic streams.
