IPOH: Fourteen Bersatu divisions in Perak have called on party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign, citing concerns over the party’s prospects ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).
Pasir Salak Bersatu chief Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin said Muhyiddin must take responsibility for recent developments within the party and place Bersatu’s interests above his own.
The former Perak Bersatu secretary said that the president’s refusal to step down could jeopardise the party’s standing across all constituencies in GE16.
“At 78 and facing ongoing court proceedings, Tan Sri Muhyiddin‘s personal matters risk becoming a liability for both Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional (PN) as a whole,” he said.
Zainol also pointed to recent controversies in the Dewan Rakyat involving the disappearance of the president’s son-in-law, which attracted widespread attention and ridicule.
“What are we defending, and how? As party president, his actions affect the party’s image. A dignified resignation would demonstrate strong leadership. We do not want to see Tan Sri Muhyiddin become a ‘Najib Razak version’ of Bersatu.
“When Najib became a liability, he persisted, placing trust in the wrong people, ultimately leading to electoral losses. We hope Muhyiddin does not repeat this,” he added.
The press conference was attended by committee members from 14 Perak Bersatu divisions, including Tanjung Malim, Pasir Salak, Teluk Intan, Tapah, Kampar, Gopeng, Parit, Beruas, Ipoh Timor, Padang Rengas, Bukit Gantang, Bagan Serai, Larut, and Gerik.
