Anwar: No serious incidents along Thai-Cambodian border thanks to diplomacy

KUALA LUMPUR: Ongoing diplomatic engagement between Cambodia and Thailand has ensured that no serious incidents occurred along their shared border during the critical hours.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim said this was despite the fact that no definitive resolution had yet been reached between the two countries.

He also said he had a discussion with Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet yesterday on the ongoing tensions along their shared border.

“I appreciate the openness and willingness of both leaders to continue negotiations aimed at easing tensions and preventing any misunderstandings that could further escalate the situation.

“While a definitive resolution has yet to be reached, sustained diplomatic engagement has ensured that no more serious incidents occurred during these critical hours,” he said in a statement today.

also said Malaysia will continue to support peaceful dialogue, solutions grounded in international law, and strengthen regional cooperation to safeguard the stability and security of the shared region.

On Monday, Reuters reported that Thailand launched air strikes along its disputed border with Cambodia, after both countries accused the other of breaching a ceasefire agreement.

The Thai military reportedly said that at least one Thai soldier has been killed and four wounded in the fresh clashes that broke out around two areas in the easternmost province of Ubon Ratchathani after its troops came under Cambodian fire.

Meanwhile, Cambodia’s defence ministry said in a statement that the Thai military had launched dawn attacks on its forces in two locations, following days of provocative actions, and added that Cambodian troops had not retaliated.

Earlier today, US President Donald Trump said he would make a phone call to stop the conflict, after brokering the ceasefire in July.

Thailand’s foreign minister said in an interview on Tuesday that he saw no potential for negotiations in the border conflict, adding that the situation was not conducive to third-party mediation, while a top adviser to Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet told Reuters his country was “ready to talk at any time.”
