[UPDATED] Bung Moktar dies

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman and Kinabatangan member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, has died.

He was 66.

News of his death was announced by his son, Naim Kurniawan Moktar, in a Facebook post today.

“It is with great sadness that my father, Moktar Radin, has passed away on Dec 5 at 1.46am.

“We kindly request prayers for his soul to be blessed with mercy and placed among the righteous. Al-Fatihah,” wrote Naim.

Bung, who was also Sabah liaison committee chairman, had been admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit since yesterday afternoon.

Sabah secretary Datuk Jafry Ariffin told Sinar Harian that Bung, who is also the Lamag assemblyman, was in critical condition due to kidney failure and a severe lung infection.

A former Sabah deputy chief minister, Bung Moktar was first elected Kinabatangan MP in 1999 and held the seat ever since. He has served as Lamag assemblyman since 2020.

During the 17th Sabah general election, which concluded on Nov 29, he retained the Lamag seat for another term with a slim majority of 153 votes in a six-cornered contest.
