Thai authorities reinforce Golok River to prevent floods

KOTA BARU: Thai authorities have reinforced flood-prone areas along the Golok River, which forms part of the Malaysia-Thailand border, by placing sandbags to prevent floodwaters from entering Malaysia, particularly in Sungai Golok, as a precautionary measure.

Narathiwat province police chief, Major General Prayong Kotsakha, said the sandbags, installed by local enforcement agencies about two weeks ago, were placed in anticipation of possible river overflow.

“Like our counterparts in Malaysia, the agencies involved in flood disaster management have been taking various measures to address the issue. This measure aims to prevent further flooding in the province,” he said.

Regarding the flood situation in Narathiwat province, he added that conditions are now under control and almost back to normal.

“So far, four people have died due to the floods in Narathiwat — three elderly women and a young boy. They drowned in separate incidents across the province,” he said.

Prayong also noted that Thai police have not received any reports of break-ins or thefts at shops during the floods.

Narathiwat is among the provinces in southern Thailand located close to , Malaysia.
