MACC records statement from woman in Albert Tei video as probe continues

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today recorded a statement from the woman seen in a video clip of a conversation with businessman Albert Tei, as part of its investigation into allegations involving the former senior political secretary to the prime minister.

Sources said the woman, identified as Sofia Rini Buyong, arrived at the MACC headquarters in at 2pm.

As of 8pm, the statement-taking process was still ongoing.

“MACC has also contacted the former senior political secretary to the prime minister and was informed that he was unable to attend today as he is currently in Sabah.

“He is expected to give his statement at the MACC headquarters tomorrow noon.

“Meanwhile, businessman Albert Tei informed the commission that he is facing certain unavoidable issues and will be at the MACC headquarters to have his statement recorded on Monday,” the source said.

The source added that, for now, only these three people have been called in, and the MACC will decide whether to summon additional witnesses based on necessity and the development of investigations.

“Anyone contacted by the MACC must come forward promptly to facilitate investigations, especially when it involves a serious case such as this,” the source said.

Meanwhile, MACC investigations senior director Datuk Zainul Darus, when contacted, confirmed the matter.

Yesterday, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said MACC will investigate allegations of bribery involving Tei and Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.

Shamsul on Tuesday announced his resignation as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim’s political secretary.

Shamsul said he had become aware of attempts to exploit a recent controversy to tarnish the image of the government.

His resignation comes in the wake of a dispute surrounding the alleged issuance of a letter of support for contractors involved in a hospital project.
