KOTA BARU: Police have tightened surveillance along the -Thailand border as water levels continue to rise in several districts.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said smugglers typically turn to boats or small vessels to navigate certain routes during major floods.

However, he added that police are prepared to adjust their operations accordingly to curb such activities.

“At the border, police, including the General Operations Force (GOF) personnel, are conducting continuous monitoring.

“If water levels rise significantly, smugglers may use boats to access certain areas.

“But the police will also change our strategies to prevent this,” he said.

Mohd Yusoff said the flood situation in was still under control, with evacuees mostly from low-lying areas affected by heavy rain.

He reminded evacuees to bring along valuables and important documents when relocating to temporary relief centres.

“The police will conduct patrols in areas left behind by flood victims.

“If anyone refuses to evacuate, we will instruct them to move for their own safety.

“They should not remain at home out of fear that thieves might break in.

“We are here to conduct surveillance and checks,” he said.

As of now, he said, no break-in cases have been reported involving homes left vacant due to the floods.

“Usually, such reports, if any, are made after the floodwaters recede,” he added.
