PETALING JAYA:

The first wave of flash floods currently hitting following continuous heavy rain is mainly in the state’s coastal areas, says state secretary Tengku Faziharudean Tengku Feissal.

Tengku Faziharudean said districts in the south and north have yet to be affected, Sinar Harian reported.

“Kota Bharu has seen the highest number of temporary flood relief shelters, with 19 set up for affected residents,” he said when visiting flood victims sheltering at SK Sabak in Pengkalan Chepa today.

The state has recorded a total of 9,731 flood victims, led by Tumpat (4,966) followed by Kota Bharu (2,799), Bachok (1,826) and Pasir Putih (140).

Tengku Faziharudean advised residents in areas exposed to strong winds, heavy rain and rough seas to take precautions given the forecast of continuous heavy rain until Wednesday.

He also said the shelters have sufficient stocks of basic necessities, supplied through agencies such as the social welfare department.
