KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will provide assistance to top Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) students from underprivileged backgrounds to pursue tertiary education, including at institutions abroad.
Its chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said this in a social media post about an MRSM student who scored 9As in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, which was announced yesterday.
“It is heartbreaking to hear the story of an orphaned and poor MRSM student who scored 9As but could not collect their SPM results due to financial constraints.
“Mara will support this student through university, even (if they pursue tertiary education) abroad,” he said in a post on his Facebook page.
In a subsequent social media posting, Asyraf also said he has instructed the Mara director-general to arrange a meeting with all top MRSM students who scored straight As in the SPM exam.
The students, he said, include recipients of assistance under the BUDI Holistic Development Programme (BHDP), who come from families in the hardcore poor income bracket.
“I will meet with the students to explain the opportunities that Mara will offer in strategic fields that meet future career demands.
“For outstanding students from underprivileged backgrounds like this, Mara will guide them to continue their studies, even abroad.
“As I always emphasise to students, only education can change one’s life, family, and community,” he added.
